What Country Is This Code? Dialing Code Lookup

A phone number that starts with a + or 00 is an international call, and the digits right after tell you the country. For example, +1 is the USA and Canada, +44 is the UK, +98 is Iran and +234 is Nigeria. Use the list below to find the country behind any code, then call it straight from your browser with StartACall. Your first call is free, then it is pay as you go with no subscription.

How to read an international code

Every country has a unique calling code, assigned by the International Telecommunication Union. On a mobile the code is written with a + in front, for example +49. From a landline you usually dial 00 instead of the +, so +49 becomes 0049.

The code is 1 to 3 digits long. After it comes the local number, often without its leading 0. So a German number written +49 30 and the rest means country code 49, then the Berlin number.

What Country Is This Code? Identify Any Phone Country Code

In short

A phone code at the start of an international number is the country calling code, the digits dialed after a plus sign or 00 to reach a specific country. For example, +1 is the United States and Canada, +44 is the United Kingdom, +91 is India, and +234 is Nigeria. Match the leading 1 to 3 digits after the plus sign to find the country.

How to read a country code

Country codes are the 1 to 3 digits that follow the plus sign in an international number. The plus sign means "dial the international access prefix for your location," which is 011 in the US and Canada and 00 in most of Europe. So a number written as +44 20 7946 0000 is dialed as 011 44 20 7946 0000 from the US.

Read the digits from left to right and stop at the first match. Single digit codes belong to large zones, so 1 covers the US, Canada and much of the Caribbean, and 7 covers Russia and Kazakhstan. Most countries use two or three digits, such as 33 for France, 81 for Japan, 49 for Germany, 55 for Brazil and 234 for Nigeria.

Common country codes at a glance

+1 United States and Canada, +20 Egypt, +27 South Africa, +33 France, +34 Spain, +39 Italy, +44 United Kingdom, +49 Germany, +52 Mexico, +55 Brazil, +60 Malaysia, +61 Australia, +63 Philippines, +81 Japan, +86 China, +91 India, +234 Nigeria, +351 Portugal, +971 United Arab Emirates.

Be careful with shared codes. Many Caribbean nations sit inside +1 and are told apart by their three digit area code, so +1 876 is Jamaica and +1 809 is the Dominican Republic. If a code is missing entirely, the number may be local rather than international.

Call any country code from your browser

Once you know which country a code belongs to, you can place the call directly in StartACall. It runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox with no app download and no SIM card, so you dial the full international number and connect from any computer or phone browser.

Outbound calls need no phone number of your own and are pay as you go, billed per minute, which makes reaching an unfamiliar country code cheap to test. Calls are end to end encrypted. If you also want to receive calls back, you can add a US or Canada number for about $2.14 to $5 per month.

Frequently asked questions

What does the plus sign before a phone number mean?+

The plus sign is the universal stand in for your local international dialing prefix. It tells your phone or app to add 011 in North America or 00 in most other regions before the country code, so the same written number works from anywhere.

Why do the US and Canada share the same country code?+

Both belong to the North American Numbering Plan, which assigns them the country code +1 along with many Caribbean nations. They are distinguished by their three digit area codes rather than by the country code itself.

How do I tell a country code from an area code?+

The country code comes first, right after the plus sign, and identifies the nation. The area code comes next and identifies a region within that country. For example, in +1 212 555 0100 the country code is 1 and 212 is the New York area code.

Can I call a foreign country code without a phone plan?+

Yes. With StartACall you call from your browser with no SIM card and no app download. Outbound calls need no phone number of your own and are billed per minute on a pay as you go basis.
