Country codes Nigerians call most

In short

The country codes Nigerians dial most are the USA and Canada on +1, the UK on +44, China on +86, Italy on +39 and South Africa on +27. To call any of them, dial the plus sign, the country code and the number without its leading zero. With StartACall you do this from your browser with no app, no SIM and no airtime.

The most dialled codes at a glance

If you call abroad from Nigeria often, a handful of country codes cover most of your calls. The USA and Canada both use +1, the United Kingdom uses +44, China uses +86, Italy uses +39 and South Africa uses +27.

The pattern is always the same. You dial the plus sign, the country code and then the number, dropping any leading zero the local number carries. Italy is the one exception, since it keeps the leading zero on landline numbers even when you call from abroad.

What each destination costs

The USA and Canada are about $0.046 a minute, a flat rate for mobile and landline. The UK is about $0.0514 a minute on a landline and $0.0955 on a mobile. South Africa is about $0.11 on a landline and $0.15 on a mobile.

Italy is about $0.054 on a landline and $0.14 on a mobile. China is the most expensive of the group, about $0.97 a minute on a landline and $1.03 on a mobile. Every call also carries a small $0.004 connection fee.

One simple way to call them all

Rather than memorising carrier access codes, you can call every one of these destinations the same way with StartACall. Open your browser, type the plus sign, the country code and the number, and the call connects over wifi or data.

There is no app, no SIM and no airtime needed, since the call uses the internet rather than carrier airtime. Billing is per minute with no monthly plan, the credit never expires, and the first call is free so you can test any of these routes before you load credit.

Where the leading zero comes off, and where it stays

For most of these countries you remove the single leading zero before adding the code. A UK London line 020 becomes +44 20, and a South African Johannesburg line 011 becomes +27 11. The +1 countries are different, since American and Canadian numbers have no leading zero to drop, just the three digit area code after +1.

Italy is the one to remember, because it keeps the leading zero on landlines, so Rome stays +39 06. Get the zero rule right for each country and the call connects first time, which saves you redialling a number the network has rejected for being one digit too long.

Landline or mobile changes the price

For several of these destinations a mobile costs more than a landline, because the call ends on a mobile network. The UK, South Africa, Italy and China all charge more for mobiles, while the USA and Canada keep one flat rate whatever the line type.

So when a contact has both a home line and a mobile, the landline is usually the cheaper choice for a long talk, except for the USA and Canada where it makes no difference. With StartACall the rate is shown before you dial, so you always know which is which and never get a surprise on a long call.
