How to Call New York

New York has a complex system of area codes, especially within NYC. Here is how to connect.

Calling from Abroad

  1. 1Dial your country's exit code (e.g., 00 for UK/Europe).
  2. 2Dial 1 (US Country Code).
  3. 3Dial the 3-digit NY Area Code (e.g., 212 for Manhattan).
  4. 4Dial the 7-digit phone number.

Calling from USA

  1. 1Dial 1 (optional on mobile).
  2. 2Dial the 3-digit NY Area Code.
  3. 3Dial the 7-digit phone number.

Tip: Always use 10-digit dialing in NYC (e.g., 212-555-0199) as local 7-digit dialing no longer works.

Beyond 212: How New York State's Codes Layer Together for Overseas Callers

In short

New York packs more area codes into one state than almost anywhere else, from Manhattan's famous 212 to the broad upstate regions. This guide sorts the city's overlay stack, maps the upstate codes to their metros, and covers timing and pricing for calls from Europe, Asia, and beyond.

Manhattan's Stack and the Outer Borough Family

Manhattan began with 212, which became scarce enough to develop a resale market of its own. New Manhattan numbers now draw from 646 or 332, both overlays on the same island. The digits carry social signal locally, but all three connect identically from abroad.

Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island historically use 718, joined by the 347 and 929 overlays. These codes now blanket all five boroughs alongside 917, so a New York City contact can plausibly hold a number in any of seven codes without anything being wrong.

917 deserves its own note. Assigned in 1992 across all five boroughs, it was marketed heavily for mobiles and pagers before overlays became routine, which is why New Yorkers still read it as the city's cell code even though the numbering plan never created a formal mobile distinction.

Upstate Is a Different Map Entirely

Outside the city, codes follow regions. The Capital District around Albany uses 518 with the 838 overlay, Syracuse and central New York use 315 with 680, Buffalo and Niagara use 716, and Rochester stands alone on 585. The Southern Tier around Binghamton and Ithaca runs on 607.

The Hudson Valley between the city and Albany uses 845, while Long Island splits into 516 for Nassau County and 631 for Suffolk. If a supposedly Manhattan contact hands you a 631 number, they are actually out in Suffolk, sometimes a two hour drive from Midtown.

Westchester County, directly north of the city, uses 914, a code that covered the whole lower Hudson Valley until 845 was split off in 2000. Today the 914 and 845 boundary roughly marks where the commuter belt shades into upstate proper.

Scheduling Across Eastern Time

All of New York State observes Eastern Time, five hours behind London and six behind Paris or Berlin for most of the year. European business callers get a generous window, since 2 pm to 6 pm in Western Europe covers 9 am to 1 pm in New York.

From East Asia, aim late. Tokyo runs thirteen to fourteen hours ahead, so a 9 pm call from Japan reaches New York around 7 or 8 am. From the Gulf states, four pm in Dubai is 8 am in Manhattan, right at the start of the trading day.

What It Costs and How to Dial

Every New York code, city or upstate, is priced the same internationally, and mobiles carry no surcharge because they share the geographic codes. Dial your exit code, then 1, then the ten digits, or store the number with a leading plus sign and skip the exit code.

Per-minute browser calling suits both quick business calls and long family conversations. StartACall connects through WebRTC in any modern browser, needs no app or SIM, charges no connection fee, and offers the first call free to test the line. Credits never expire between calls.

Frequently asked questions

Are 646 and 332 numbers really Manhattan?+

Yes. Both are overlays on the original 212 territory, created as Manhattan's number supply ran out. A 332 number is just newer, not less central, and dials identically from abroad.

Which code is Rochester on?+

Rochester uses 585, one of the few New York codes still without an overlay. Buffalo nearby uses 716, and Syracuse uses 315 or its 680 overlay. All three regions dial identically from abroad.

What is the difference between 516 and 631?+

Both are Long Island, but 516 covers Nassau County closer to the city while 631 covers Suffolk County further east, including the Hamptons. They are separate regions, not overlays. The code alone places a contact on the island.

How many hours behind Dubai is New York?+

Dubai runs nine hours ahead of New York in winter and eight in summer. A 5 pm call from Dubai reaches Manhattan at 8 or 9 am, so late afternoon Gulf time catches New York mornings.

Is a 917 number a mobile?+

Often, since 917 launched as a citywide code used heavily for cell phones, but it is not guaranteed and it makes no price difference. US rates treat every number type the same.
